The Mann Government has made these changes so children do not stay hungry in school. Many children in villages do not get full meals at home. When food is given in school, the child learns better. Teachers say students stay more active in class after eating. With better nutrition, children fall sick less often. This helps both families and schools. The scheme is not just about food but building a stronger future generation.
Earlier, Upper Kindergarten children were not getting mid-day meals. The government has now included almost two lakh UKG children in government schools. This is important because small children need more nutrition for growth. Many children come to school without breakfast. When they receive proper food, they feel safe and cared for. Their parents also feel relieved that the child’s daily meal is ensured. This step supports both families and children.
The government started giving seasonal fruits to children once a week. At first bananas were given. Now fruits like Kinnow and carrots are also included. This improves the diet naturally. Seasonal fruits are fresh and available easily in Punjab. Farmers also benefit because the produce is bought locally. This supports children’s health and local economy at the same time.
A new weekly menu has been made by nutrition experts. The aim is to give protein, vitamins and minerals in the right balance. Foods like dal, rajma, rice, vegetables and rotis are planned properly. Children enjoy the taste and feel full. Teachers report better mood and focus among students. This shows that small changes in diet can make a big difference.
The government is planning a Breakfast Scheme for children. Many children arrive at school hungry. A morning meal will help them focus from the first class. Tamil Nadu runs this scheme successfully. Punjab may soon join. If approved, more women will get work as cooks. Children will benefit even more. This shows the government is thinking for long-term growth.
Around 44,301 women work as mid-day meal cooks. For many, this is the main source of income. They come early every day and cook with care. Children call them “School Mother.” These women are respected in the community. Their work gives them dignity and strength. They keep the system running every single day.
These women earn around ₹3,000 per month. This is less compared to the effort they put in. The government has asked the Centre to increase their honorarium. They also need insurance and safer work conditions. If their support improves, the whole system becomes stronger. They deserve respect and fair pay because they feed the future of Punjab.
